Math: We started chapter 5 last week (Nov. 1st). Chapter 5 is working with 2-step word problems. We will be taking the Chapter 5 test this Thursday (Nov. 10th) The new concept is using bar models to understand and solve word problems. I am not requiring using this method to solve word problems, but it does give a good visual for those students that need it. I have attached the chapter 5 wrap up page for your information.
Reading: We are reading The Gardener this week. It is a story about a little girl during the Great Depression who goes to live with her Uncle during hard times to work. The story is written in a series of friendly letters to her family. We will be learning some background knowledge on the Great Depression before reading the selection. We will be focusing on the cause and effect relationships in the story. Our comprehension test will be on Friday.
Writing: We are finishing up the last of our persuasive letters this week and getting them published. Look for them to come home soon! We will hopefully start our informational piece this week with learning how to gather information from different sources on the internet. This piece will take us about a month to complete.
Social Studies: We finished Unit 2 last week.
Science: we are beginning a new unit on Monday (Nov. 7th). This unit we will explore fast and slow changes, rocks and minerals and fossils.
